4.7 Hammer at £252
Last years main fault
of the Hammer seemed to be the too massive mast, on a standard mast it felt by
far too heavy for a Wave sail. The completely new designed sail also had been
given a mast treatment in 2005 and you probably won't recognize the rig anymore:
On the skinny mast it now provides enough power, when needed and effectively
lets off excrescent pressure in the cutback or bottom turn.
Even if it still does not belong among the most agile sails on the wave, overall
the Gun convinces as a well balanced wave sail. Good suspension, easy handling
and excellent controllability in strong gusts…
With a lot of tolerance at the clew - for the luff tension one adjustment shall
be enough – the sail's characteristics can be varied almost without limitations…
even pulled flat the sail still planes on quickly and takes on speed effectively
with one or two pumpings. Therefore one would probably use it rather seldomly in
the powertrim, for the lateral / diagonal powers then increase noticeably.
Result: A reasonably priced, overall felicitous wave sail with a wide
range of use. In side- and onshore-areas it feels better than in pure
side-offshore-spots, where a perfect “off” is required.

Im letzten Jahr war am Hammer vor allem der schwere „Stiel“ zu bemängeln,
auf dem Standardmast wirkte es für ein Wavesegel einfach zu schwer. Dem völlig
neu designten Segel wurde für 2005 zusätzlich noch eine Mastkur verpasst – und
das Rigg ist nicht wieder zu erkennen: Auf dem Skinny stellt es jetzt genügend
Power zur Verfügung – wenn man sie braucht – und lässt überschüssigen Druck beim
Cutback oder Bottom Turn effektiv entweichen. Auch wenn es auf der Welle noch
nicht immer zu den agilsten Segeln zählt: Insgesamt überzeugt das GUN als sehr
ausgewogenes Wavesegel: Gut gedämpft, leicht im Handling und sehr leicht
kontrollierbar bei Hack. Mit viel Spielraum am Schothorn – für die
Vorlieksspannung genügt eine Einstellung – lässt sich die Segelcharakteristik
beinahe beliebig verändern, und auch flach gezogen gleitet das Segel immer noch
flott an und lässt sich effektiv mit ein, zwei Pumpzügen in Fahrt bringen. Im
Powertrimm wird man es daher selten verwenden, denn dann steigen die Querkräfte
spürbar und beim Abreiten muß man den Grundzug in den Turns kraftvoll
ausgleichen.
Fazit: Ein günstiges, gelungenes Wavesegel mit großem Einsatzbereich. In Side-
bis Onshorerevieren fühlt es sich dabei wohler als an reinen Sideoffshore-Spots,
an denen es auf perfektes „Off“ ankommt.
