6.2 Jam at £236
With the new Jam 6.2
Gun Sails appeals to the price-conscious freestyleers. The sail is sold directly
to the customer at £236 without any trader’s margin.
However, the Jam appears to be rather poorly equipped, because the colourful
prints are a bit deceptive.
The sail consists mainly of monofilm, only reinforced with a narrow layer of
x-ply at the leech. Again a competition sail such as the Severne Freek at £365
(£129 more) where a thicker film has been used. – One of Gun Sails´ basic
principles, for being a direct mail order company; they have to keep warranty
cases as few as possible.
On the water the Jam starts off a little later, but takes on planing well. While
cruising the centre of effort lays calmly between mast-hand and sheet-hand, the
feeling is basically a little "freeridy“, neutral and less twitchy / nervous.
In manoeuvres the centered profile changes sides with smoothly suspended
rotation and provides a rather good tempered and somewhat indirect handling.
All in all, a matter of taste, for no trick is impossible to do and with a
controlled on-off, the Jam flies neutrally through the wind.
The Jam´s luff trim is to be set in this way, the between batten one and two –
counted from the upper end – a loose dent appears in the sail, reaching
approximately half way from leach to the mast. The range of use can
significantly increased by a pull at the outhaul.
Result: Smart-shoppers, who want to shoot a well balanced product with
only a few bullets could strike with the Gun Sails Jam version.

Gun Sails spricht mit seinem Jam 6,2 preisbewusste Freestyler an: Das
Segel wird für 289 Euro direkt an den Kunden verkauft, eine Händlerspanne gibt
es dabei nicht. Dennoch wirkt das Jam eher sparsam ausgestattet, denn der bunte
Druck trügt: Die Segelfläche besteht hauptsächlich aus Monofilm und wird nur
durch eine schmale X-Ply-Lage im Achterliek aufgewertet. Also ebenfalls ein
Competition-Segel wie das Severne Freek? Zumindest wurde ein dickerer Film
verwendet, der auch längere Haltbarkeit verspricht.
Ein Grundprinzip bei Gun Sails, die aufgrund der Sonderposition als
Versandhandel Garantiefälle möglichst niedrig halten müssen. Das Jam startet auf
dem Wasser etwas später, gleitet jedoch ordentlich an. Beim Cruisen liegt der
Druckpunkt ruhig zwischen Mast- und Segelhand, das Fahrgefühl ist tendenziell
etwas freeridig neutral und weniger agil oder nervös. In Manövern wechselt das
bauchige Profil mit weich gedämpfter Rotation die Segelseite und beschert dem
Trickser eher ein gutmütiges, etwas indirektes Handling. Reine Geschmackssache,
denn sämtliche Segeltricks sind uneingeschränkt machbar – mit mittlerem On-Off
dreht und fliegt das Jam neutral durch den Wind. Der Vorliekstrimm des Jam wird
so eingestellt, bis sich zwischen Latte eins und zwei, von oben gezählt, eine
lockere Delle im Segeltuch bildet, die sich vom Achterliek bis zum Mast ungefähr
bis zur Hälfte erstreckt. Der Einsatzbereich kann dann durch Zug an der
Trimmschot noch deutlich nach oben erweitert werden.
Fazit: Sparfüchse, die sich mit wenig Pulver ein ausgewogenes Produkt schießen
wollen, könnten mit der Jam-Version von Gun Sails ins Schwarze treffen.
