Test report of Surf March 2007

Booster 8.7 at £339 Under the Spotlight

You could spend over £500 and get less performance...

On land:
The small mast sleeve only retains very little water. But it makes rigging a bit more difficult when you have to weave the mast through sleeve and cambers. There is no room to adjust the cambers after the mast is in place. But then you will make up any time when clip the boom on. The gap for the boom is more spacious than with most other sails. You can comfortably adjust the boom position for 7-foot giants as well as Bonsai racers. The Gun Booster is the only sail in this group that requires a 5.20m mast. The protector has generous dimensions, the downhaul pulley is perpendicular to the sail, all materials are very good quality. The batten trimmers are well protected, but only on one side.

On the water:
The Booster seems somewhat heavier and bigger at first, but surprises with easy pumping and good acceleration (here comes the slightly bigger size into play). During planing the sail feels firm and stable. The fact the heavier surfers get along better with this sail than the lighter riders suggests that the Booster might be little top heavy. The long mast and boom require longer arms. It’s easy to trim. With the same downhaul you can surf this sail in a wide wind range. The fine-tuning can be done with just the outhaul. The sail feels neither stiff nor soft, but offers the ideal compromise between direct and smooth feel.

Conclusion: powerful and neutral, not quite miracle when it comes to manoeuvres

Surf tip: for heavy and strong surfers

Test results:
• Early planing: very good
• Speed in medium wind: very good
• Ability to control strong wind: good
• Top speed: very good
• Handling: good
• Easy surfing: good
• Sailing upwind: very good

Test report of Planchemag 2007

BOOSTER 7.5 at £330 Under the Spotlight
You could spend over £500 and get less performance...

“You sail concentrating less on the physical side and more on smoothness through the water.”

How it feels on the water:
Light, the Booster’s planing abilities are up to good, coupled with smooth acceleration. As a result, you sail concentrating less on the physical aspects and more on finesse and smoothness through. The trade-off is that you don’t have much power in marginal winds and a little less back hand. When there is wind, the Booster sits slightly under the best in terms of performance. The positive side is that you sail with light pull on the backhand and it twists off well in gusts. This is a sail that needs steadier winds to really perform. The more unreliable the wind, the more it loses points, especially sailing close to the wind. Finally, when gybing the cambers rotate perfectly and are well-balanced.
A pleasant and user-friendly three cam sail which will appeal to a wide range of people. It isn’t the best in performance terms, but it makes up for this with its lightness, handling and fine control which reduce rider fatigue.

The design:
With a fairly long boom, the Booster has evolved in terms of graphic design and materials. For example, all of the sail around the orange frame is built from X-ply. The luff pocket isn’t wide and contains no less than 8 battens (five tubular). The draft and leech looseness are both reasonable. With its heavy-duty construction, this is one of the best reinforced sails. We noted a triple down haul pulley for 2007.

Tester’s opinion:

Alex/1.82m/83kg
“I was a little disappointed because of its narrow wind range and lack of power. I was expecting a sail with a little more oomph, especially for someone my size, so I wouldn’t have any trouble planing. This sail really hits its stride when there’s some wind, especially for manoeuvres.”

Booster 8.7 at £339 Under the Spotlight

Equipped with three cambers sitting in a reasonable-sized luff pocket, the Booster is the Gun Sails freerace sail. It sits just under the Meag XR, their race sail, within the range of this direct sales specialist. The mast cut-out, to leave space for the boom, is wide so as to provide ample space and facilitate attachment and removal of the boom head. This is a good idea from a practical point of view, but not fantastic aerodynamically. This shows the ‘leisure’ orientation of the Booster, which is very powerful but a touch heavy in the hands and in handling terms. Nevertheless, this sail is one of the most user-friendly. It’s also the one which provided the earliest planing in the group. Of course it was also the biggest but it can’t be denied that it developed great power for its size, especially when rigged with a little bit of shape. Because of these two qualities, it showed very good performance in low winds. However, even when the wind gets up it remains pleasant to use and accelerates well when you want to go blasting. Even so you shouldn’t be afraid to flatten it out slightly. In its upper wind range it becomes a sail which can move around a little in the hands. It won’t hold on as long in high winds as a Pryde or Gaastra GTX. During manoeuvres we liked the soft and quick rotation of the foil.

In short, the Gun Booster is a sail aimed at early planing and ‘cruising’, which offers good performance in low and medium winds but pulls a little more on the hands in its high wind range. Recommended for summer sessions with a gentle sea breeze.

+ power and low-end performance, early planing, user-friendliness.
- elastic tack strap a touch short, heavy in the hands.
